Strahota, Dare boost U to Big Ten soccer title

The No. 25 Gophers women's soccer team defeated Iowa 1-0 in Iowa City on Friday to earn its first-ever Big Ten regular-season title.

The Gophers (18-2-0, 8-2-0 Big Ten) finished in a tie with Penn State, which lost to Ohio State 1-0 on Friday.

Freshman Tam Strahota scored the only goal off an assist from Kaitlin Wagner.

With their 18th victory the Gophers tied a single-season school record for victories in a season set by the 1997 squad.

Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Dare recorded her school record 15th shutout of the season.

U falls in volleyball

Top-ranked Penn State (23-0, 11-0 Big Ten) increased its winning streak to 49 consecutive matches with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 victory over the No. 13 Gophers (18-5, 8-3) at State College, Pa., on Friday.

Lauren Gibbemeyer had eight kills and two blocks and Brook Dieter had six kills, a team-high nine digs and three blocks to lead the Gophers.

Swimming

Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving teams both took 50-point leads over North Carolina in the first day of a two-day dual meet in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Everett files

Shortstop Adam Everett was one of 42 players to file for free agency on Friday. Everett, a free-agent acquisition who battled shoulder problems for most of the season, batted .213 in 48 games with the Twins.

The Twins also have added righthander Armando Gabino to their 40-man roster. Gabino, a reliever, was 6-5 with a 3.10 ERA for Class AA New Britain this season.

• St. Paul's Matt Vanda will fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. tonight in Las Vegas in a rematch of a controversial 10-round split decision won by Chavez on July 12. Vanda is 39-7 and Chavez is 37-0-1.

• Lynx coach Don Zierden was named radio analyst for Gophers men's basketball games.

• Former St. Olaf men's track & field and cross country coach Bill Thornton will be presented the MIAC Distinguished Service Award on Saturday following the conclusion of the MIAC Cross-Country Championships at Como Golf Course.
