Ex-Gopher requests a new trial

Last update: October 25, 2008 - 10:52 PM

Former Gophers football player Dominic Jones, who was convicted this spring of sexual assault, is requesting a new trial.

The appeal was filed this week on behalf of Jones, who is serving a one-year sentence in the Hennepin County workhouse.

Jones says there are several reasons he should get a new trial, including the fact that the defense couldn't tell jurors the victim had sex with other players earlier on the night in question.

The 21-year-old native of Columbus, Ohio was accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman but was convicted of a lesser sexual assault charge.

Prosecutors say he performed a sex act on a drunken woman that was recorded on a cell-phone camera.
