Gear Alert

Every angler needs tools, and the more compact the better. Generically called "multi-tools,'' products popularized by Leatherman and worn on belts now are made by many manufacturers. Varying in quality and features, these handy gadgets include knife blades often accompanied by scissors, files and, importantly, pliers. The compact nature of multi-tools makes them ideal for fishing, particularly for hook extraction, whether from a fish's mouth or an angler's hand. Also, virtually all multi-tools feature screwdrivers, saws, can openers and corkscrews. Key is not to overbuy, making the tool too bulky. Portability and convenience are the most important features.
