Big Fish biting opening weekend

(As told by dad, Andy Scheldrup) My daughter, Caroline, made a Mother's Day outing last Sunday on Lake Vermilion one to remember. With coaching from her brother John, 17, who caught a 23-inch walleye earlier in the morning, Caroline, with fishing rod bending almost to the point of breaking, reeled in her personal best, a 24-inch walleye made even more special because her mom, Beth, was in the boat to witness the big catch. We released the fish.

NICE CAT

Mikkel Haugen (right) of St. Peter and Jeff Nerison of Wanamingo found that walleyes weren't the only fish biting on the opener. Haugen caught and released this 27-inch channel catfish Saturday on the Minnesota River near St. Peter.

SOUTHERN LUNKER

Aaron Hager of Eagle Lake, Minn., caught this monster 27-inch walleye opening weekend on Lake Washington near Mankato while fishing with his daughter, Makayla. He caught it on a fathead minnow.
