The Timberwolves, their season beset with injuries from the start, have suffered another one.

The Wolves announced Saturday that second-year forward Shabazz Muhammad will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured ligament on the middle figure of his left (shooting) hand. The surgery will be done Monday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

It is the latest in a long list of injuries that have hit the Wolves' roster from top to bottom. That list includes losing guard Ricky Rubio for 42 games because of a severely sprained ankle, center Nikola Pekovic for 31 games with an ankle problem and guard Kevin Martin for 34 games because of a fractured right wrist.

Muhammad himself had recently returned after having missed 16 games because of an oblique muscle strain. Backup forward Robbie Hummel has missed the last 10 games because of a broken hand.

Wolves coach Flip Saunders said Saturday that Muhammad first injured the finger when it got stuck in Andrew Wiggins' jersey during practice Wednesday. Muhammad tried to play through the injury, playing nearly 13 minutes in Friday's victory over Phoenix at Target Center.

In 38 games this season — which included 13 starts — Muhammad averaged 13.5 points per game on 48.9 percent shooting. He was one of four Wolves who participated in the Rising Stars Challenge over All-Star Weekend.

With Thaddeus Young traded to Brooklyn in the Kevin Garnett trade, Saunders said after Friday's game that Muhammad would get minutes both forward positions down the stretch of the season.

With Garnett expected to play limited minutes, that means Garnett, Anthony Bennett (once he returns from an ankle injury), rookie Adreian Payne and Gorgui Dieng will split time at the power forward position.
