Setting up the final week of baseball's regular season

  • Updated: September 20, 2008 - 11:39 PM

Entering the weekend, the Angels were the only team that had clinched a playoff spot. That leaves seven more spots for a host of teams, including the Twins, who will try to make a final-week run in the AL Central for the second time in three years.

• • •

After an off day on Monday, the Twins will finish with a six-game homestand against the White Sox and Royals. The first-place White Sox are at the Metrodome Tuesday through Thursday.

• • •

The best division race in the National League is in the East, where the Phillies and Mets are repeating last year's run to the wire. The Brewers, meanwhile, are trying to sneak into the postseason for the first time since 1982.

• • •

The Yankees will play their final game in the House that Ruth Built today against the Orioles (7 p.m., ESPN). Yankee Stadium opened on April 18, 1923.

• • •

Joe Mauer can win his second batting title in three seasons. He entered the weekend leading the American League with a .327 average. Magglio Ordonez and Dustin Pedroia, however, were right behind him at .326.

• • •

Justin Morneau, having another MVP-type season, can become the fourth Twin to win an American League RBI title, joining Harmon Killebrew, Larry Hisle and Kirby Puckett.
