Area college football roundup: Gagliardi ties Robinson mark in victory

Jeff Schnobrich and Michael Crees scored on fourth-quarter TD runs as St. John’s beat Wisconsin-River Falls 22-6 on Saturday in Collegeville, Minn, in a game where John Gagliardi matched another one of Eddie Robinson’s college football coaching records.

Gagliardi, the coach of the Johnnies (2-0) since 1953, tied Robinson for the most games coached, at 588. Gagliardi, who broke the
Grambling legend’s record for coaching victories five years ago, earned his 455th career victory Saturday.

Storm Harmon’s touchdown early in the fourth quarter pulled Wisconsin-River Falls (0-1) to within 10-6 before St. John’s responded with an eight-play, 50-yard drive that ended with Schnobrich’s touchdown from 4 yards out. Later, Crees scored on a 6-yard run, ending an 11-play, 67-yard drive.

Hamline 19, Martin Luther 13: Kyle Ingles broke a tie with a third-quarter touchdown catch, and the Pipers (1-0) beat the host Knights (1-1) in New Ulm, Minn. Mitchell Schultz ran for 116 yards and a TD.

Carleton 38, Cornell 14: Shane Henfling passed for 374 yards and five touchdowns as the Knights (1-0) accumulated 579 yards of offense in a victory over the Rams (0-2) in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Chris Gardner caught eight passes for 223 yards and two TDs for Carleton.

Wheaton 10, Bethel 7: Mike Ittersagen returned a punt 65 yards for the only touchdown, and the Thunder (1-0) beat the Royals (1-1) in a steady downpour in Wheaton, Ill. The teams combined for 11 fumbles.

Concordia (Moorhead) 38, Dickinson State 13: Cory Johnson ran for two touchdowns and also caught a TD pass as the host Cobbers (1-1) beat the Blue Hawks (0-2).

Augsburg 30, Wartburg (Iowa) 24, 2OT: Jason Potts’ 23-yard touchdown run in the second overtime lifted the Auggies (2-0) over the visiting Knights (1-1).

Gustavus 27, Coe 19: Two second-half touchdowns by freshman Elliot Herdina carried the Gusties over the Kohawks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Herdina gained 74 yards in three carries, one for 68 yards and a TD, and caught three passes for 40 yards, including a 9-yard TD reception.

St. Olaf 17, Pacific Lutheran 0: Coty Watkins and John Haberman each rushed for a touchdown, and the Oles (2-0) won in Northfield, Minn., for their first shutout since 2005. St. Olaf held the Lutes (0-1) to minus-12 yards rushing.

Division I

Wyoming 16, North Dakota State 13: Jake Scott’s 29-yard field goal with four seconds left gave the Cowboys a victory over the Bison in Laramie, Wyo.

Scott’s field goal was set up by Derrick McMahen’s interception of a pass by NDSU quarterback Nick Mertens. That gave the Cowboys (2-1) the ball on the Bison 28-yard line with 1:28 left.

All of Wyoming’s points came in the second half after NDSU (2-1) had scored the game’s first 13 points. The Bison, ranked No. 1 in the Championship Subdivision coaches poll, led 10-0 at halftime. Mertens led the Bison with 215 yards passing and one TD.

North Dakota 45, Wis.-La Crosse 7: Sophomore running back Josh Murray carried the ball 23 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Sioux (3-0) over the Eagles in Grand Forks, N.D.

South Dakota St. 24, W. Illinois 22: Quarterback Ryan Berry ran and passed for first-half touchdowns as the Jackrabbits (2-1, 2-0) held on for a Missouri Valley Conference victory over the Leathernecks (1-2, 0-1) in Brookings, S.D.

SE. Louisiana 31, South Dakota 30: Sophomore linebacker Mark Newbill forced a fumble on the potential game-winning two-point conversion, enabling the Lions (2-1) to hold off a late rally by the Coyotes (1-2) in Hammond, La.

NSIC

St. Cloud State 31, Wayne State (Neb.) 17: Mitch Watkins passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two as the host Huskies (1-2, 1-1 NSIC) beat the Wildcats (2-1, 1-1).

Winona State 31, Bemidji State 7: Andrew Verbancouer ran for two short touchdowns and the Warriors (2-1, 2-0) extended their home winning streak to 32 games by beating the Beavers (1-2, 0-2).

Augustana 59, Minnesota-Crookston 0:  The Vikings (2-1, 2-0) scored 22 first-quarter points on their way to a rout of the host Golden Eagles (1-2, 0-2).

Minnesota State Mankato 40, Mary 0: Ryan Fick passed for three TDs and the host Mavericks (2-1, 2-0) shut out the Marauders (1-2, 1-1).

WIAC

Jeff Schelber kicked three field goals as No. 2 Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated No. 12 Wisconsin-Eau Claire 16-14 at Carson Park in Eau Claire. … Wisconsin-Stout rolled to a 37-13 victory over Jamestown in Menomonie behind Kyle Provos’ two TD passes. … Wisconsin-Stevens Point amassed 329 yards in a rain-soaked, 45-7 victory over Iowa Wesleyan in Stevens Point. …  St. Ambrose scored 27 unanswered points in beating Wisconsin-Platteville 34-17 in Davenport, Iowa, as Will Ducey completed 21 of 42 passes for 297 yards.
