Minnesota Duluth football coach Curt Wiese said some of his players were suspended after police cited them for underage drinking, some have lost scholarships and two have been stripped of their roles as team captains.

UMD’s season opener is Saturday at home against Concordia (St. Paul).

Five Bulldogs will miss that game after receiving one-game suspensions, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

WDIO-TV reported that Wiese said the weekend underage drinking party was hosted by football players. Names were not released.

Duluth police said officers responded to a house party late Sunday night where about 75 people had gathered. Officer Matt Nevanen said police spent about 90 minutes handling the situation and writing citations.

Area athlete honored

Former Northwestern (St. Paul) volleyball player Krista (Stoltz) Bellefeuille is one of the 30 semifinalists for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year award. She is one of 10 Division III athletes in contention for the award, which recognizes athletics, academics and community service.

Bellefeuille, of Lino Lakes, was a first-team all-UMAC volleyball player three times, and conference player of the year in 2013. She graduated with a 3.96 GPA.

D-man Seeler to join U

Defenseman Nick Seeler, who played for Omaha the past two seasons, will join the Gophers. As a transfer, Seeler will have to sit out the 2014-15 season but can practice with the team, and he will have two years of eligibility when he can begin to play in the fall of 2015.

Seeler played his high school hockey at Eden Prairie, was a Wild fifth-round draft pick in 2011 and had six goals and 13 assists in 70 games with the Mavericks.
