Minnesota scene: Pitcher wins all six games to lead Sobieski to title

  • Updated: September 2, 2014 - 8:08 AM

Sobieski shut out the New Ulm Brewers 2-0 in the Class C state amateur title game at Jordan.

Tyler Jendro, 26, was the winning pitcher in all six games for Sobieski. He had complete games in his four starts, including a no-hitter against New Market in the quarterfinals Friday night. He also pitched 5⅔ innings in relief of Kyle Petershick, the Skis’ other starter, and was the winner in both games.

The state amateur tournament dates to 1924. Jendro’s six victories and 41⅔ innings pitched were records. He allowed one run, 19 hits, three walks, three hits batsman and 44 strikeouts in those 41⅔ innings. He also had the winning RBI in three of the games.

The Class C title was a first for Sobieski, a village that draws most of its players from Little Falls.

The Class B title went to the Cold Spring Springers with a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud Beaudreau’s in Belle Plaine.

It was the Springers’ second title in a row and their ninth overall in a record 52 state tournament appearances.

Jendro had finished Sobieski’s rain-delayed, 2-1 victory over Faribault in a semifinal that started Monday morning. He went to manager Brad Czech when it ended and said, “I’m good,’’ meaning he was ready to face potent New Ulm in the title game.

“They have some big guys on that team who really swing the bat,’’ Jendro said.

Senior running back John Crockett of Minneapolis (Totino-Grace) was chosen the FCS player of the week, after rushing for 139 yards and three touchdowns for North Dakota State in a season-opening 34-14 victory at Iowa State on Saturday.

Bison senior defensive end Kyle Emanuel, who forced a fumble and had two sacks among his nines, was chosen the defensive player of the week.

The Bison, who own a 25-game winning streak, rose to No. 1 in the FCS poll.

Saints end on low note

T.J. Mittelstaedt’s two-run homer in the ninth game the host Kansas City T-Bones an 8-6 victory over the Saints in the completion of a game suspended from Sunday.

The T-Bones also won Monday’s regularly scheduled game 12-10, overcoming a 5-0 first-inning deficit and two homers and a career-high five RBI by St. Paul’s Jake Taylor in the Saints’ season finale.

The Saints finished the season with six consecutive losses.
