Minnesota Scene: Running Aces to pay $400K into horsemen's fund

The Minnesota Racing Commission has approved a plan for Running Aces Harness Park to pay an additional $400,000 to its horsemen’s purse fund, resolving a shortage accrued through five years of underpayments.

A report by the Minnesota legislative auditor determined that the Columbus harness track did not comply with state law regulating the amount it was required to contribute to purses from 2008 through 2012. The report, released in July, estimated the track underpaid purses by $436,865. Running Aces has paid an additional $100,000 to the purse fund this season and will contribute an additional $100,000 to the fund in each of the next three seasons. It also will pay to promote racehorse ownership in Minnesota as part of the deal, which ends a 14-month dispute between the commission and Running Aces over the purse payments.

The commission also approved an agreement between Running Aces and Canterbury Park to allow both tracks to immediately resume full menus of simulcast wagering on thoroughbred, quarter horse and harness racing. Since February 2013 — when Running Aces canceled its simulcast contract with Canterbury — each track had been allowed to simulcast only the breeds that race at its facility.

One pitch beats Saints

Ian Gac led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run, the lone score in the Lincoln Saltdogs’ 1-0 American Association victory over the Saints.

Starter Nick Barnese worked eight scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out six, before giving way to Mikey Mehlich, who gave up Gac’s 25th homer, a franchise record for the Saltdogs.

Klasse, Pilot tied

Leigh Klasse of Keller Golf Course and Claudia Pilot of The Pines tied for first-round lead at 6-over par 78 at the Senior Women’s State Amateur championship at Blueberry Pines Golf Club in Menahga, Minn. Brenda Williams of Windsong Farm is two strokes back.

U soccer team loses

Sophomore Ashley Pafko scored the Gophers’ lone goal late in the first half of a 4-1 loss at second-ranked Florida State, completing a two-game season-opening Florida trip for the soccer team.
