Tartan volleyball coach decides to stay on this year

Tartan’s list of new coaches for the 2014-15 school year dropped by one when Josh Mattison had a change of heart and returned to coach the volleyball team. The Titans finished 14-13 under Mattison in 2013 and he has plenty to work with this season, led by talented senior outside hitters Kayla Morris and Lily Reyes. If new setter Hope Capistrant can quickly identify their strengths, look for the Titans to make a significant step forward.

Other new coaches at Tartan are Chris Galbraith (boys’ soccer), Becca Pratts (dance team) and Tim Obr (girls’ basketball).

All eyes up front

Keep an eye on Forest Lake’s Maggie Kramer. The 6-1 junior middle hitter is the Rangers’ tallest player. Her varsity experience is limited, but her presence at the net should go a long way toward taking pressure off starting frontliners Emily Lindstrom and Tia Moscatelli.

Woodbury pumped

Second-year Woodbury coach Tara Schubring is understandably excited about her team’s chances this season. She has six starters back from a team that finished 14-15 in 2013, led by senior middle hitter Lauren Aeilts and junior setter Cameron Frost. “The word ‘state’ has already come out of my mouth for [our] future outlook,” Shubring said.

New Life Academy is No. 8

According to Breakdown Sports’ 2014 volleyball preview magazine, New Life Academy is No. 8 in its Class 1A analysis and considered the favorite to win the Section 4 title. The youthful Eagles have only one senior — libero Maddie Stocker — and juniors Abby Gorter, Kara Stenerson and Abby Thor are entering their fourth season as starters.
