Adrian Peterson won't play in preseason opener

Posted by: $author Updated: August 5, 2014 - 5:36 PM

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson said he talked to head coach Mike Zimmer about his workload for Friday’s preseason opener against the Raiders.

“Maybe 10-15 carries in this game. …I’m joking,” Peterson said.

The conversation probably lasted about as long as the quote. Peterson will not play on Friday at TCF Bank Stadium, Zimmer said on Tuesday, but every other healthy player will be available.

Peterson started one preseason game last season, Week 3 against the 49ers, but he hasn’t received a preseason carry since Week 3 of the 2011 season.

The 2012 NFL MVP missed two of the last three games last season and switched over to a new scheme with offensive Norv Turner this season. Peterson doesn’t think it’s necessary to participate in preseason but there could be a possibly he receives a few carries.

“Of course with the new offense, you might want to get out there and get a couple plays in but that’ll be something that I’ll sit down with Zimmer and talk about to discuss,” Peterson said. “…Once you know the offense, you pretty much know the offense. You go out there and run full speed in the regular season. That’s pretty much what we’re doing here.

Zimmer has already made it known he doesn’t see Peterson’s capabilities in the preseason. Peterson’s absence will give Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon a good amount of snaps against the Raiders.

“I’m going to be pretty tuned in to see those guys play,” Peterson said. “I love the game, an ultimate competitor. So I’ll be in tune, coaching as well, and cheering for those guys.”
