Minnesota Scene: Saints win sixth in a row

  • Updated: July 23, 2014 - 10:09 PM

Angelo Songco’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie as the St. Paul Saints won their sixth consecutive game Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Sioux Falls Canaries 4-3 at Midway Stadium.

The Saints moved 12 games over .500 (38-26) and trailed North Division leader Winnipeg by three games heading into Wednesday night’s American Association games. They led the Laredo Lemurs by 3 ½ games in the wild-card race.

Mikey Mehlich, the Saints’ third pitcher of the day, improved to 6-1 with 1 ⅓ innings of shutout relief. Dan Sattler tossed a perfect ninth for his 15th save. The Saints have won their past seven one-run games.

The Saints scored their other three runs in the bottom of the third. All three Sioux Falls runs were unearned. The Saints committed four errors.

Songco, Devin Thaut, Sam Maus and Willie Cabrera each had two hits.

Vikings drop one, add one

The Vikings waived defensive end Spencer Nealy and replaced him on their 90-man roster with tight end Mike Higgins.

Nealy, 24, spent time on the Vikings’ practice squad last year, but he never was elevated to the active roster during his first professional season. He recently was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The 6-5, 242-pound Higgins, 26, played four games for the Saints in 2011 and 2012, including one start.
