Minnesota Scene: Saints rallly in ninth to finish sweep of Laredo

  • Updated: July 20, 2014 - 11:12 PM

Willie Cabrera hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the St. Paul Saints a 3-2 victory and a three-game series sweep of the Laredo Lemurs on Sunday at Midway Stadium.

The victory gave the Saints a two-game lead over Laredo in the American Association’s wild-card standings. St. Paul remains 3 ½ games behind Winnipeg in the North Division.

With the Saints trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, Joey Becker led off with a single to left off Laredo closer Chad Povich. Dwight Childs’ sacrifice bunt moved Becker to second. With two outs, Sam Maus drew a walk, putting runners at first and second. Cabrera then lined a 0-1 pitch to the right field wall, scoring both runners to secure the victory.

Appeal to the King prevails in stakes race

Jockey Dean Butler waited patiently on Appeal to the King, sitting just off the early pacesetter I Forgot It’s Name, before attacking at the top of the stretch and drawing off to win by 9 ¼ lengths in the $55,000 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes at Canterbury Park. The 3-year-old Minnesota-bred thoroughbred has won three of five lifetime races, including the top prize for 2-year-olds bred in the state, the 2013 Northern Lights Futurity.

Appeal to the King, owned by Wayne Simon of Tolstoy, S.D., and trained by Bob Johnson, has earned $97,028. He returned $14.40 to win. Hansboro closed from last to finish second and Granite Ridge was third. I Forgot It’s Name faded to fifth. Final time for the 6 ½ furlongs was 1 minute, 17.92 seconds over a fast main track.

• Elk River’s Laura Ryan finished 11th in the women’s 3-meter final at the FINA Diving World Cup in Shanghai, the top international meet of the 2014 season and the last major world meet before Olympic qualifying begins next year.

Tomac wins, Dungey second at Millville

Eli Tomac dominated en route to his first career victory, sweeping each of Saturday’s motos to become the fourth different winner in the 450 Class this season at the AMA Lucas Oil Pro Motocross championship in Millville, Minn.

After taking his second victory of the season one week ago, Ryan Dungey of Belle Plaine finished third in the first 450 Class moto and second in the second to finish second overall at his home track. Dungey is second in the standings to Ken Roczen, who finished third overall Saturday.

In the 250 Class, Millville native Jeremy Martin won for the fourth time this season, extending his points lead to 43 over Cooper Webb, who won the second race but finished ninth in the first.
