This is your week to wake up to golf. The 143rd British Open, the third men’s major of the year, was scheduled to begin at 12:25 a.m. Thursday (Minnesota time) at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England.

Notable tee times: If you’re an early riser, you can still catch part of Tiger Woods’ opening round. He had a 3:04 tee time. Later tee times included 8:05 for defending champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Bubba Watson and Ernie Els, and 8:27 for world No. 1 Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Jason Dufner.

Tiger watch: At 38, Woods will resume his quest for a 15th major title after missing the year’s first two majors because of spine surgery. The last time the tournament was held at Liverpool, in 2006, Woods played with precision, avoiding every fairway pot bunker and making several nervy putts to win his 11th major championship.

The course: Royal Liverpool was brown in 2006 and Woods hit driver only once in 72 holes. It is green this year, though recent sunshine could make it firm and bouncy. It is the only links course on the current British Open rotation that ends with a par-5 hole. In the past 20 years, only five major championship venues ended with a par-5. Woods won on four of them.

Did you know? The past three British Open champions — Mickelson, Els and Darren Clarke — were all in their 40s.
