Quick Q&A: Ben Miller, Woodbury soccer

  • Updated: July 12, 2014 - 3:57 PM

Woodbury High School seems to produce soccer stars, especially defenders named Miller. While 2011 graduate Eric Miller now plays professionally in the MLS, senior Ben Miller, 16, has helped make a name for himself and his club team TwinStars, which ranks in the top 120 nationally and will compete in the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association’s summer state tournament next week.

No relation to the other Miller? People ask me that. We’re not related at all. It’s kind of cool, but I’d rather not be compared to him. I’d rather people go one day, “Oh, Ben Miller’s in MLS, too.”

How does it feel to be in one of the top clubs in the country? At the beginning of the year, no one knew who we were. We kind of came out of nowhere. We were a group of nobodies, essentially, and to come this far is amazing.

Any expectations for your senior preps season? The last two years I’ve been on the varsity team, we’ve lost in the first round of sections. So that’s kind of upsetting. But this coming year … I’m hoping we are able to make it to the state tournament. And as a player myself … next year I want to be on the all-state first squad and possibly be in the running for Mr. Soccer.

What’s your Netflix binge-watching obsession? Last summer the movie “The Dictator’’ was on Netflix, and my teammate lives close by. So almost every night before a game, we would watch that, and he would sleep over.

Is soccer gaining credibility in the U.S.? I’m really glad to see the sport expanding because I know it has a lot of potential in the U.S., and I know a lot of good players, and I want to see it go somewhere.
