Five Gophers invited

Five Gophers will be among 42 players at the U.S. junior national evaluation camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., in August.

Forwards Hudson Fasching, Taylor Cammarata and Vinni Lettieri and defenseman Michael Brodzinski — all sophomores — received invitations, along with incoming freshman defenseman Ryan Collins.

The players will compete for spots on the 2015 U.S. team for the World Junior Championships Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal.

Seven players return from the 2014 U.S. junior team, including Fasching.

Other Minnesotans invited to the camp are Clint Lewis (Cornell), Jack Dougherty (Wisconsin), Tommy Vannelli (Medicine Hat of the WHL), Connor Hurley (Notre Dame) and Keegan Iverson (Portland of the WHL).

Mark Osiecki, a Burnsville native and former Ohio State head coach, will be the U.S. team head coach.

Extra holes needed

Patrick Vincelli and Leif Carlson will play in the final of the 15th MGA Senior Players' Championship on Thursday at Brackett's Crossing Country Club in Lakeville.

Both had to play extra holes in one of their two victories Wednesday. Vincelli edged defending champion Steve Whittaker 2 and 1 and Carlson beat Jim Lehman in 20 holes in semifinals.

After taking the 15th hole, Vincelli made another birdie on the 16th to force Whittaker to win the final two holes to stay alive, but both players made par on the 17th and Vincelli clinched his spot in the final.

It's the second appearance for Vincelli in the finals. He was runner-up in 2009, losing to Gary Johnson at Chaska Town Course.

Champion still going

Defending champion Troy Johnson beat Jesse Bull 5 and 4 and Joe McCormick nipped Joel Johnson after 19 holes in the semifinals of the eighth MGA Mid-Players' Championship at Brackett's Crossing.

The Johnson-Bull match was a repeat of the championship match a year ago. Johnson won 3-2 that day.
