St. Thomas stranded 13 runners and saw its bid for another NCAA Division III baseball championship end Monday with a 10-7 loss to Emory in Grand Chute, Wis.

The Tommies led early at 3-0 and 4-2 but stranded runners in scoring position in seven innings. Emory tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth, went up by a run in the sixth and sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run seventh.

St. Thomas (39-9) finished third in the country for the second time in three seasons.

Emory (38-12) advances to play Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11 a.m. Tuesday, needing two victories to win the title. The Warhawks are unbeaten in the double-elimination D-III World Series.

St. Thomas’ Ben Podobinski had three hits and a walk and became the 12th MIAC player to reach 200 career hits. Podobinski (nine hits) and J.D. Dorgan (eight) led the Tommies in the World Series and finished with 202 and 205 career hits, respectively.

Stakes race record

Tell All You Know won the 20th running of the $75,000 Honor the Hero Stakes in track record time on Monday at Canterbury Park. The 5-year-old covered the five furlongs over a firm turf course in 55.85 seconds under jockey Dylan Davis.

Castletown and jockey Jorge Carreno finished second and El Seventyseven was third with Alex Canchari aboard. Three scratches, including defending champion Bet Seattle, reduced the field to five entrants.
