St. Thomas defeated Linfield, the defending national champion from McMinnville, Ore., 10-0 on Friday in the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.

Sophomore Eric Veglahn threw a two-hitter for the Tommies (38-7) and retired the first 21 hitters he faced.

“It was just one of those days,” said Veglahn, a southpaw from La Crescent, Minn., who had a career-high 12 strikeouts. “I had good location on my fastball, and my curve and slider were working, too.”

Catcher J.D. Dorgan was 2-for-3 with three RBI for St. Thomas, which scored five runs in the first inning and five in the sixth.

The Tommies, who have a 13-game winning streak, will play Baldwin Wallace of Emory, Ga., at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the winners’ bracket. They are 11-0 in first- and second-round games in the national tournament the past 16 years.

Softball team wins, too

In the Division III softball World Series in Tyler, Texas, St. Thomas routed Rochester, N.Y., 9-1 in the losers’ bracket on Brenna Walek’s grand slam in the first inning and Katie Jo Delisle’s five-hitter.

Walek’s homer was her 17th of the season, tying a program record. Teammate Emily Gregory had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs.

The Tommies (42-7) will play either Tufts or Montclair State at 5 p.m. Saturday.

• Gophers junior Leandro Toledo lost to Pepperdine’s Alex Sarkissian 7-6, 6-2 in the round of 16 on Friday in the NCAA men’s tennis championship in Athens, Ga. Reaching the third round of play makes Toledo, of Hamburg, Germany, the Gophers’ first All-America tennis player since 2002.

• Four players on Minnesota community college teams were recognized by the NJCAA on its Division III All-America teams. Freshman infielder Ashley Bunting of Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) and sophomore center fielder Donielle Kurvers of St. Cloud CTC made the first team, sophomore pitcher Oashaja Dobie of Rainy River and sophomore third baseman Vicky Fossland of Mesabi Range made the second team. Kurvers and Fossland, who hit .650 and .573, respectively, also got the Elite Hitter Award.
