The University of St. Thomas scored five runs in the first inning and five more in the sixth to defeat Linfield College of Oregon 10-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III baseball tournament Friday morning.

Eric Veglahn pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12 while walking only one for the Tommies, who will play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Appleton, Wis.

Four players led the St. Thomas offense with two hits each, and Linfield pitchers also walked eight St. Thomas batters.

In softball, St. Thomas grabbed an 8-0 lead after two innings and went on to defeat University of Rochester 9-1 in the losers' brackets in Tyler, Texas. The Tommies had lost their opening game 1-0 on Thursday to Salisbury University.

Brenna Walek hit a home run and had four RBI for St. Thomas, which will play at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Opponents for both of those games had yet to be determined as of early Friday afternoon.
