Minnesota Scene: Gophers open hockey season with Ice Breaker at Notre Dame

Three tournaments highlight the 2014-15 Gophers men’s hockey schedule, which was released Thursday.

The Gophers play in the Ice Breaker tournament on Oct. 10-12 at Notre Dame, host the Mariucci Classic on Jan. 2-3 and return to the North Star College Cup at Xcel Energy Center on Jan. 23-24.

U tennis ace in final 16

Gophers junior Leandro Toledo defeated Diego Galeano of Baylor 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 on Thursday in the second round of the NCAA men’s tennis tournament in Athens, Ga. He is the first Gopher to advance to the Round of 16 since 2002.

Tommies shut out

Rachel Johnson pitched a four-hitter as Salisbury (Md.) beat St. Thomas 1-0 on Thursday in the opening game of the NCAA Division III softball tournament in Tyler, Texas. The Sea Gulls (41-3) scored in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
