Johnny Love's Friday Canterbury Park line

  • Updated: May 15, 2014 - 10:22 PM

Post time: 6:30 p.m. Best bet: Sky And Sea (4th race). Best play: 50 cent Pick 4: (3,4,5,6/1,3,4,5,6,7/1,2,3,5/6), $48.

1 1 mile, 70 yards. Open. 3-year-olds and up. Claiming $12,500. Purse: $13,500.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Manlee Spirit (Castro, Peters) 123 12-1

2: Dreamin Grand (Ordaz, Silva) 118 10-1

3: Fist Full (Velazquez, Scherer) 123 3-1

4: Al Musaddad (Keith, Biehler) 123 7-2

5: Ell’s Kitten (Carreno, Diodoro) 123 8-5

6: Smart Masterpiece (Canchari, Canchari) 123 7-2

ELLA’S KITTEN will take them as far as he can go as the lone speed while dropping in class and jumping off the turf. Good measuring gauge to start the season to see if the track continues its speed bias. SMART MASTERPIECE ran a impressive second last out at Santa Anita after a slow start and rolling late picking off his rivals. FIST FULL and AL MUSADDAD are both closers who might decide to sit closer to the pace and tailgate in this six-horse field.

2 5½ furlongs. Fillies. 3-year-olds. Maiden claiming $12,500. Purse: $11,500.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Sudden Tempest (Olesiak, Sheehan) 122 7-2

2: Susanita (Canchari, Canchari) 122 15-1

3: Gents Little Lady (Goodwin, Bethke) 122 12-1

4: Sweet G (Butler, Donlin) 122 3-1

5: Swinging Moon (Carreno, Diodoro) 122 5-2

6: Darkessa (Delorme, Miller) 122 12-1

7: Dthirteenthelement (Velazquez, Lund) 122 4-1

8: War Memories (Keith, Rengstorf) 122 15-1

SWINGING MOON has been facing tougher foes down at Turf Paradise and could be tough to catch with a clean break for trainer Diodoro, who seeks to sweep the early double. SWEET G could tag along up front and surprise with 2013 leading jockey Butler aboard in this frail field. DTHIRTEENTHELEMENT has shown brief speed chasing the pace and figures to be in the hunt under new barn.

3 5½ furlongs. Fillies. 3-year-olds and up. Claiming $6,250. Purse: $10,500.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Reasonable Effects (Ordaz, Silva) 119 6-1

2: Julie S. (Hernandez, Brinson) 119 5-2

3: Bring the Check (Martin Jr., Litfin) 123 3-1

4: Sweet Stormy (Canchari, Scherbenske) 123 8-1

5: Eric’s Misdeed (Hamilton, Heitzmann) 123 2-1

6: One Fine Lady (Eikleberry, Silva) 119 8-1

JULIE S. will try to sneak away from the field with early speed coming off a five-length victory at Hawthorne in gate-to-wire fashion. Trainer Brinson usually gets off to quick start in the winner’s circle. ERIC’S MISDEED should escort our top pick up front, shadowing right behind for the first attack. Has hit the board in three of the past four attempts. BRING THE CHECK jumps off the grass facing better at Lone Star Park for newly claimed trainer. A slight cause for concern is that its best efforts have been on the lawn.

4 5½ furlongs. State-bred. Fillies and mares. 3-year-olds and up. Allowance. Purse: $35,000.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Informal Fannie (Castro, Bethke) 121 15-1

2: Blumin Sweetheart (Canchari, Robertson) 117 3-1

3: Silver Somerset (Eikleberry, Donlin) 121 15-1

4: Rockin the Bleau’s (Hamilton, Robertson) 117 5-2

5: Echo Canyon (Olesiak, Johnson) 117 10-1

6: Sky and Sea (Butler, Rhone) 117 1-1

SKY AND SEA appears to be the cream of the crop in this field. Favorable speed figures makes this filly my top pick of the night for the consistent Rhone/Butler duo. Trainer Mac Robertson sends out BLUMIN SWEETHEART and ROCKIN THE BLEU’s off long layoffs as lone threats if ready to fire; logical exotic plays.

5 5½ furlongs. State-bred. Open. 3-year-olds and up. Maiden Special Weight. Purse: $31,000.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Macho Storm (Castro, Bethke) 119 15-1

2: Royal Tramp (Keith, Biehler) 119 12-1

3: Sluggo Bay (Swiontek, Livingston) 118 10-1

4: Saviormoney (Shepherd, Van Winkle) 119 5-1

5: Holy Brass (Martin Jr., Weir) 123 8-1

6: Pennant Fever (Eikleberry, Hanson) 119 10-1

7: Bet Your Socks (Butler, Rhone) 119 9-5

8: Sam’s Silver Star (Martinez, Rengstorf) 119 4-1

9: Chocolate I Scream (Rivera, Bethke) 119 10-1

BET YOUR SOCKS is a good bet with the best speed numbers in this uninspiring maiden group. Should tag along behind the front runners in perfect stalking position and should prove tough first off the claim. HOLY BRASS will be a major player if ready to transfer his form from poly to dirt with decent early speed. SLUGGO BAY and CHOCOLATE I SCREAM are making their initiation to racing and could play large with the perfect field to start their careers.

6 10,000 Lakes Stakes. 6 furlongs. State-bred. Open. 3-year-olds and up. Purse: $60,000.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Freedom First (Carreno, Donlin) 116 15-1

2: Bourbon County (Butler, Rhone) 116 4-1

3: Bing’s Magic (Hamilton, Robertson) 116 6-1

4: Coconino Slim (Martinez, Robertson) 120 7-2

5: Speakfromyourheart (Keith, Hanson) 118 12-1

6: Victory Sled (Goodwin, Riecken) 116 20-1

7: Heliskier (Canchari, Robertson) 123 1-1

HELISKIER, a two-time Minnesota Horse of the Year, returns to defend his 10,000 Lakes Stakes title after a couple of so-so performances at Oaklawn Park this spring. Should get a dream trip starting from the outside post and pressing the pace from the get-go before making a final threatening move. BOURBON COUNTY is all speed and is coming off the long layoff with a decent work tab for trainer Rhone; might need a race before returning to top form. COCONINO SLIM looks to be the main threat to the favorite but seems to be a runner who would prefer two turns. SPEAKFROMYOURHEART has been training extremely well and could be compromised by a fast pace up front for the first attack from mid pack.

7 5½ furlongs. State-bred. Open. 3-year-olds and up. Maiden special weight. Purse: $31,000.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Speed is Life (Canchari, Oliver) 119 10-1

2: Spring to the Wire (Olesiak, Gaede) 119 8-1

3: Gottcha Silver (Olesiak, Johnson) 119 9-2

4: AP the MVP (Keith, Biehler) 119 8-1

5: Hrishi Suprem (Stevens, Bethke) 119 10-1

6: Crow River Dancer (Dieguez, Bethke) 123 15-1

7: Vanderbilt Beach (Martinz, Rengstorf) 119 4-1

8: Regards (Eikleberry, Hanson) 119 6-1

9: Slippery Ice (Delorme, Miller) 119 5-1

10: Demi Blue (Butler, Rhone) 123 8-1

GOTTCHA SILVER could find himself alone on the lead with a possible chance of sneaking away from the field if it’s able to avoid punishing fractions. VANDERBILT BEACH figures to be in the hunt off the long layoff after flashing some early speed ability last year. Might have found perfect field to break his maiden. REGARDS’ best effort was his unveiling three starts back and has a realistic assignment from an 8-month layoff for the first start of his 3-year-old career. DEMI BLUE gets the slight nod of the beginners in the field for trainer Rhone, who can fire first time out.

8 5½ furlongs. State-bred. Open. 3-year-olds and up. Claiming $4,000. Purse: $9,500.

#/Horse, Jockey, Trainer Wt. Odds

1: Eurasian (Canchari, Oliver) 123 8-1

2: Rocky Tiger (Dieguez, Goodsell) 123 10-1

3: Human Eraser (Canchari, Rarick) 123 15-1

4: Hard Nosed (Goodwin, Riecken) 123 12-1

5: Go Getem (Stevens, Lynn) 123 7-2

6: Forest Passage (Brown, Holder) 123 20-1

7: Good Guy Larry (Hamilton, Scherbenske) 123 10-1

8: Incisive (Eikleberry, Lund) 123 8-1

9: Our Family Affair (Swiontek, Oliver) 118 8-1

10: Mr. Shorty (Martin Jr., Heitzmann) 123 10-1

11: Redneck Richie (Keith, Cole) 123 12-1

12: One Firm Cat (Carreno, Diodoro) 123 9-2

MR. SHORTY has been facing tougher on the turf down south and could enjoy the transfer to the northern soil with good tactical speed to surprise at a value price. GO GETEM is the deserving M/L favorite. Enjoys the minor awards but last visited the winner’s circle 18 starts ago. EURASIAN enters with consecutive victories and should gather momentum on ground-saving rail trip.
