(As told by her husband, Scott Hough) My wife, Sue, likes to fish for crappies by bobber in the summer when it's calm and warm at our cabin on Lake Hubert. She never had gone walleye fishing and certainly would not go out during a normal opener. However, after a nice Mother's Day brunch this year, I suggested we take the pontoon out because it was beautiful, and just for kicks I set her up with a Lindy Rig and a leech. About 30 minutes later she yells that either she has a big fish or the trolling motor has her line. I said the motor is off and I'll get the net. A few minutes later she boated a 27-inch walleye that the DNR chart estimated was more than 7 pounds. I congratulated her on her first walleye and told her this was like a non-golfer getting a hole-in-one!

A day with Grandpa: Chase Risic, 6, of Tonka Bay, right, with four crappies and a northern he and his grandpa, Rick Zweig of Excelsior, caught on Lake Minnewashta on the fishing opener.

BWCA bass: Tim McMullen of Delano with a 20 ¾-inch smallmouth bass he caught in the BWCA. Though many lakes there were ice-covered, McMullen and his son found open water — and good fishing — on the Kawishiwi River.
