5-inning doubleheader option approved for prep baseball, softball

  • Updated: May 5, 2014 - 7:10 PM

The Minnesota State High School League made shorter games permissible to help schools deal with weather-related game postponements.

Five-inning double-header games for high school baseball and softball in Minnesota will be permitted to help schools cope with inclement spring weather in parts of the state where few games have been played.

The Minnesota State High School League said Monday that its board of directors’ executive committee approved the relaxation of the rule requiring 7-inning games.

The league said it has alerted athletic directors of the five-inning option because “weather continues to be an issue and we have teams in the northern part of the state that have yet to get outside.’’ The league urged that the option for shorter games “only be used as necessary.’’

Section tournaments in softball start as early as next week for some teams. Most baseball section tournaments begin in about 2½weeks.
