Rain arrives at Target Field, and it might stay a while

Rain fell on the tarp-covered field at Target Field on Sunday, and the weather isn’t expected to be much better in the coming days, either.

Steady rain, chilly temperatures and a biting wind led to the postponement of Sunday’s Twins-Tigers game at Target Field. It might not be the only game called off this week.

With Detroit being a division foe, the decision to not to play came quickly. The Tigers come back in August and September, so there will be plenty of chances to reschedule the game.

Kyle Gibson, the scheduled starter Sunday against Detroit’s Justin Verlander, will now start on Tuesday when the Twins are set to open a three-game series against the Dodgers and another star righthander in Zack Greinke. Gibson threw for a few minutes Sunday, just to stay sharp.

The rest of the rotation will be pushed back a day — actually two days with Monday’s scheduled off day.

The Twin Cities forecast calls for cold temperatures and rain throughout the week. Since this is the Dodgers’ only visit of the season, the Twins will do all they can to get the games played.

“It’s going to be entertaining,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “You are going to have to play, The Dodgers don’t come here anymore. We’re going to have to play them. Bottom line, there could be some ugly weather.”

The postponement Sunday is the Twins’ second of the season. The other was an April 16 game against Toronto that was made up the next day as part of a day-night doubleheader.

On the mend

Oswaldo Arcia, on the comeback trail from a sprained right wrist, s 3-for-5 after two games with Class AAA Rochester for a rehabilitation assignment. He was 3-for-3 Saturday and 0-for-2 with a walk Sunday. Gardenhire would like to see Arcia get 30-40 at-bats with the Red Wings before returning to the Twins.

“It could be quicker if he’s smoking hot and his hand feels good,” Gardenhire said.

Fellow outfielder Josh Willingham’s left wrist is still sore, right where the knob of the bat digs into his hand when he swings. But Gardenhire doesn’t think Willingham is too far off from being able to start hitting. He hoped that would happen as soon as early this week.

“He’s just waiting for the doctors to clear him,” Gardenhire said.

Willingham has been out since April 7 because of a small break in his left wrist.

• Third baseman Trevor Plouffe was in the Twins’ announced starting lineup Sunday. He left Saturday’s game because of a bruised left triceps after being hit by a pitch.

• Righthander Alex Meyer was named Twins minor league player of the week after throwing 6⅔ scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts for Rochester Wednesday against Pawtucket.

The Twins are in second place in the AL Central, the first time they have been that high in the standings since April 23, 2013.
