Gophers baseball beats Michigan with three runs in 11th inning

After squandering a 5-0 lead, the Gophers beat Michigan 9-6 on Friday in a Big Ten baseball game at Ann Arbor, Mich. Third baseman Tony Skjefte went 3-for-5 and walked with the bases loaded in the 11th to drive in the go-ahead run.

Skjefte also had two other RBI for Minnesota (16-9, 4-3 Big Ten). Teammate Connor Schaefbauer was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.

Reliever Dalton Sawyer pitched the final 3⅔ innings and got the victory against the Wolverines (13-6-1, 3-4). He gave up one run, the first earned run he has allowed this season in 20⅔ innings.

U falls to No. 1 team

The Gophers lost to No. 1-ranked Ohio State 5-2 on Friday in men’s tennis at the Baseline Tennis Center on the Minneapolis campus.

Leandro Toledo won for Minnesota at No. 1 singles, beating Peter Kobelt 6-1, 6-6 (7), and Mathieu Froment won at No. 3 singles over Chris Diaz, 6-5, 1-6, 6-3. Rueben Weber’s match at No. 2 singles went to three sets before OSU’s Herkko Pollanen won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

The Buckeyes are 22-2 overall, 7-0 in conference play. The Gophers are 9-9, 2-2.

• The Gophers women’s track and field team won nine events to finish first with 205 points in the four-team USF Collegiate meet in Tampa, Fla. Erin Hawkins won the 100, Te’Shon Adderly the 800 and Frances Conlin the 400 hurdles, and all were on the winning 4x400 relay.

• Midfielder Greg Jordan and defender Tyler Polak signed with Minnesota United FC. Both young prospects were with the NASL team during its preseason games and practices. Jordan, 23, played for Creighton in college and was with the Harrisburg City Islanders the past two seasons. Polak, 21, was with the Rochester Rhinos last season. He was a teammate of Jordan’s at Creighton in 2010 and ’11. United’s roster is now at 24 players. United opens its season at San Antonio on April 12.

• The Gophers’ softball doubleheader with Wisconsin scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium was canceled because of inclement weather. The teams are scheduled to play two games starting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the same venue.

• Darian Romanko of the Minnesota Wilderness was named the North American Hockey League forward of the month for March. Romanko, of Shoreview, had eight goals and five assists as the Wilderness went 8-1-1 last month. … Aberdeen’s Jake Horton, of Plymouth, was the defenseman of the month. His 11 points helped the Wings go 10-0 in March.
