Continued: Gophers women to face Clarkson for NCAA hockey title

  • Article by: JOE CHRISTENSEN , Star Tribune

The Gophers had their record-shattering 62-game winning streak stopped Nov. 17 against North Dakota, and Frost said that allowed everyone to exhale. Since then, they are 25-0-1, including Friday’s 5-3 comeback victory over Wisconsin.

“Sometimes I think we take for granted what they’ve done because they’ve made it look, at times, so easy and effortless,” Gophers athletics director Norwood Teague said. “But I know behind the scenes, Brad and his staff and the kids have worked extremely hard, more than we’ll ever know. And they deserve everything they’re getting.”

Pretty soon, they might get an updated hallway mural, too. So their white jerseys are ready.

TV, radio: No TV but you can follow the game live on NCAA.org. It is also on local radio at 105.1-FM.

How they got here: The Gophers defeated Boston University (5-1) and Wisconsin (5-3) in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. Clarkson defeated Boston College (5-3) and Mercyhurst (5-1).

Gophers at a glance: Minnesota (38-1-1) has nine players with at least 11 goals – Hannah Brandt (23), Rachel Bona (22), Kelly Terry (22), Sarah Davis (19), Dani Cameranesi (19), Meghan Lorence (18), Maryanne Menefee (17), Rachel Ramsey (12) and Milicia McMillen (11). … Sophomore goalie Amanda Leveille has started all 40 games this year and ranks second in the nation with a 1.12 goals-against average. … The Gophers are 5-0 all-time against Clarkson, including a 3-2 victory in the 2010 NCAA quarterfinals. The teams haven’t played since the Gophers swept the Golden Knights to open the 2010-2011 season.

Clarkson at a glance: The Golden Knights (30-5-5) are making their first appearance in the Women’s Frozen Four. The only non-Canadians on Clarkson’s roster are a pair of Minnesota goalies — Jenna Boss, a junior from Roseville, and McKenzie Johnson, a freshman from Eden Prairie. But starting goaltender Erica Howe was one of the last players cut from the Canadian Olympic team, so she has played all but one period this season. The senior leads the nation with a 1.03 goals-against average. … Patty Kazmaier Award winner Jamie Lee Rattray is a senior from Kanata, Ontario.

Notable: Clarkson has co-coaches — Matt and Shannon Desrosiers — college hockey’s first husband-and-wife coaching tandem. Both played hockey at St. Lawrence. Shannon played in the first NCAA women’s championship game in 2001, as St. Lawrence lost 4-2 to Minnesota-Duluth at Mariucci Arena.
