While Wayzata won the Class 2A boys' swimming and diving championship Saturday, rival Eden Prairie actually won more individual titles.

Wayzata's title was based on team strength. The Trojans won just one event — Greg Arnold took first place in the 100 freestyle. Eden Prairie, which crushed all comers with five champs en route to the 2013 title, had two first-place finishes and finished third overall.

Sophomore Griffin Back won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:52.63 and junior Sam Hanson slipped past Maple Grove's Mike Rouleau to win the 100 backstroke.

One surprise was a rough outing for Minnetonka diver Taylor Hall. The senior, who has committed to dive at Wisconsin, had the highest 11-dive score in the state this season and won the Class 2A, Section 6 championship. But he failed to advance past the preliminary rounds at state.

Islanders underdogs

How often can it be said that a DeLaSalle basketball team is considered a darkhorse? Such is the case for the Islanders girls' team.

In four years under coach Faith Johnson Patterson, DeLaSalle has won three consecutive Class 3A state championships after finishing third in her first season at the helm. But the Islanders have struggled with inexperience and injuries this season and ended the regular season with a relatively humdrum 14-12 record. They finished fourth in the Tri-Metro Conference tournament last week and earned the No. 3 seed in Section 3.

Patterson is one of the winningest girls' basketball coaches in state history, but leading DeLaSalle to a fourth consecutive title seems unlikely.

Lynch leads Jefferson

There's another Lynch making a basketball name for himself at Bloomington Jefferson.

Kyle Lynch, a senior forward whose uncle is former Minnesota star Kevin Lynch, guided the Jaguars into the Class 4A, Section 2 championship game Friday against Shakopee.

Lynch scored 18 points in a 63-58 upset of No. 2-seeded Chanhassen in the quarterfinals. He had 25 points as the Jaguars, seeded No. 7, pulled off another upset with an 83-64 rout of Bloomington Kennedy.
