Breck’s run of dominance is finally over.

Orono ended the Mustangs’ five-year reign over Class 1A, Section 2 on Thursday at Parade Ice Garden.

The No. 2-seeded Spartans upset top-seeded Breck 2-1 to advance to their first state tournament since 2007.

They also ended the Mustangs’ 10-game winning streak, which included 10-1 and 5-2 victories earlier in the section tournament.

Led by goalie Jonathon Flakne and a raucous crowd, Orono (19-8-1) got better as the game progressed.

Breck (22-6-1) controlled the puck throughout the game, but after it scored an early power-play goal, Flakne shut the door.

“Our goaltender was outstanding — poised at the end of the game, when not all of us were,” Orono coach Kasey Yoder said.

The Spartans turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead after goals by sophomore Jared Gheradi and senior Jake Flemmer. During the scoreless third period, their defense and Flakne made key plays to frustrate the Mustangs’ attack.

All the while, the Spartans’ fan section — a rowdy group of more than 100 students — kept the energy in the building.

When the game ended, the entire Spartans team climbed on top of the boards in front of their crowd to celebrate.

“I didn’t even know this many kids went to Orono,” Yoder joked. “I don’t know that we could have done it [without] the energy that they brought all game.”
