Maryanne Menefee’s hat trick led the Gophers to a 6-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Friday at Ridder Arena in WCHA women’s hockey.
Menefee, a sophomore from Lansing, Mich., scored her first two goals in the opening period and her third, on a power play, with 2:43 to play.
“We came out of the gates really quickly, getting the first one obviously, but the second at the end of the first was big for us,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said.
Sarah Davis added two goals for No. 1-rated Gophers (31-1-1, 25-1-1) in the first two minutes of the second period. Meghan Lorence had the other goal, in the middle of the second.
Minnesota sophomore goalie Amanda Leveille made 16 saves in her 12th shutout of the season.
“I thought we had great jump all night,” Frost said, “did good things on the power play, and our penalty kill was solid. It was a really complete hockey game up and down the lineup.”
Minnesota Duluth (13-12-6, 11-10-6-4) was outshot 40-16 and was 0-for-3 on the power play to the Gophers’ 2-for-5.
On Saturday, the Gophers seniors — Bethany Brausen, Sarah Davis, Baylee Gillanders and Kelly Terry — will be recognized. Their class has a 132-16-5 record and won the past two NCAA titles. The latest victory extended the Gophers’ unbeaten streak to 19 games.
