Vikings general manager Rick Spielman expects will with quarterback Matt Cassel's agent at the NFL Combine on Thursday.

He's planning to speak with the agent of every Vikings' unrestricted free agent at the event. Cassel opted out of his two-year deal to become a free agency two weeks ago, leaving Christian Ponder as the only quarterback on the roster.

"Yeah, we'd like to sign Matt back but also I think there will be some other options out there too and we'll look at those other potential options as well," Spielman said. He also mentioned that the team will look at quarterbacks that will potentially be cut or even trading for a quarterback.

Spielman doesn't anticipate the Vikings using the franchise tag this offseason. The three week window opened on Monday and will end on March 3. He also doesn't expect to resign anyone before the free agency period opens on March 11. The team will have an unrestricted free agency meeting after the NFL Combine.

He still expects to add a young quarterback in the draft and Spielman again said that he will lean on offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

"Norv has a really good track record with getting the most out of that position," Spielman said. "He's an expert in that area. We rely on everything – some outside stuff that I use, rely on Norv, and he'll have a huge influence on what direction this quarterback goes. Ultimately, I'm the one that's going to get the final say on it but that's why you hire experts in their areas to get advice."

It'd be ideal for Spielman if the Vikings had a veteran quarterback, a rookie quarterback and Ponder. He said there's always pressure when picking a quarterback and doesn't feel more heat after drafting Ponder in 2011.

"You always want to get good players, regardless at any position and we've got a pretty good track record of bringing in some pretty good players," Spielman said. "The quarterback thing is always going to be the one you're going to get judged on."
