No word yet on Racer's eligibility with new wrestling team

Dayton Racer will not be wrestling this weekend for his new high school — but he might soon be.

The former high-profile Apple Valley High School wrestler abruptly left the school because he claimed that parents of at least one teammate were trying to disqualify him from wrestling out of jealousy. On Monday, Racer — a defending state champion — enrolled at tiny Wheaton High School in western Minnesota and wanted to wrestle for his new team, the co-op team Border West Buccaneers, in Saturday’s sectional team competition.

Officials from Wheaton, the Minnesota State High School League and Apple Valley, which is seeking its ninth consecutive state title, have been meeting to sort through Racer’s unusual last-minute attempt to weave through the state’s high school transfer regulations and switch schools before the state tournament.

David Lee Racer, Dayton’s father, said Wheaton Principal Russell Armstrong told him Friday that while it was “too late” for Racer to wrestle Saturday, there was a possibility he could wrestle in the state tournament in the coming weeks. “He didn’t tell me ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ ” said David Lee Racer. “[But] it looks like it was going to be all right to wrestle.”

Armstrong declined to comment.

The case has cast a spotlight on Apple Valley, where wrestlers have won the most individual state titles in Minnesota state high school history and where many highly ranked members of the team have moved to Minnesota from other states. In January, Amateur Wrestling News listed Racer as the 17th-best wrestler in the 152-pound weight class in the country.
