Two of the most prolific scorers in girls' basketball met Saturday when Chase Coley and Minneapolis Washburn played defending Class 2A champion New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (NRHEG), led by Carlie Wagner, a career 3,000-point scorer and University of Minnesota recruit.

Coley, a 6-2 forward who recently set the state record for blocked shots in a career, had a career-high 49 points but it wasn't enough as the Millers lost 87-77.

Wagner, plagued by fouled trouble, finished with 34 points, two below her season average. Wagner's younger sister Maddie, a freshman guard, filled the void left by her high-scoring sibling with 16 points, many of them scored with Carlie on the bench.

Coley, who signed with Iowa in November, is third in the metro in scoring, averaging 27.1 points per game.

Hitting the court running

Reid Travis has been back in the DeLaSalle rotation since Jan. 11 and, if his statistics are a true indicator, it appears he's fully recovered from the stress fracture in his foot that kept him sidelined for the first two months of the season.

He scored in double figures in each of his first four games and had a season-high 24 points in his first start, a 72-36 victory over Breck.

His return was timed well. DeLa-Salle played Iowa City West on Saturday in the Midwest Players Classic in La Crosse, Wis. The Islanders, without starters James Lawson and Geno Crandall, fell behind early before rallying for a 60-54 overtime victory. Travis had 15 points.

Wayzata swims past 'Tonka

While Minnetonka took first place at the Section 6, Class 2A True Team swimming and diving meet Saturday, the big matchup of the weekend happened the previous night. The No. 3, Class 2A Skippers swam against Lake Conference rival Wayzata, which is ranked No. 2, in a dual meet at Lifetime Fitness in Plymouth.

With the score tied 63-63, Wayzata took the lead for good with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. The Trojans clinched a 95.5-90.5 victory with first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

Worth noting

Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity senior guard Nick Machemehl became the leading scorer in school history last week. Machemehl has 1,652 career points. The previous record of 1,558 had stood since 1984.
