Minnesota Scene: Ex-Lynx official named Atlanta general manager

  • Updated: January 22, 2014 - 6:36 AM

Angela Taylor, a former executive with the Washington Mystics, Minnesota Lynx and WNBA, has been named the Atlanta Dream’s executive vice president and general manager.

Taylor, the owner and president of NetWorks Sports Consulting, was Washington’s general manager from 2009-10 and was vice president of business operations for the Lynx from 2006-08.

Fred Williams was relieved of his duties as Atlanta coach and general manager — but retained as a consultant — after the Dream was swept by the Lynx in last season’s championship series. Michael Cooper was named the Dream’s new coach on Nov. 21.

Warning’s hat trick recognized

Sam Warning, a junior forward from Chesterfield, Mo., was named the Big Ten’s second star of the week after getting a hat trick in the Gophers’ 4-2 victory over Ohio State on Saturday. He is tied for the team lead in goals with 10 and leads in points with 26.

Etc.

• Senior forward Johnny McInnis of Minnesota State Mankato was named the WCHA offensive player of the week and junior defenseman Matt Prapavessis the defensive player of the week. McInnis had three goals and an assist as the Mavericks swept then-No. 2-ranked Ferris State. Prapavessis blocked eight shots in a 1-1 tie with North Dakota on Friday and helped the Beavers hold UND scoreless on eight power-play opportunities in two games.

• Lynx forward Maya Moore was recently named Asia-basket.com’s player of the week twice. Moore has led Shanxi, her team in China, to a 17-1 record and is averaging 39.4 points and 5.0 assists per game. Last week she had her second triple double-double as a pro player. Moore scored 33 points and had 11 rebounds and 11 steals. She also had eight assists.

• The Gophers women’s hockey team, for the 42nd poll in a row, is No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national ratings. Wisconsin is second and North Dakota fourth.
