New Prague sophomore Griffin Parriott was selected the most outstanding wrestler in the Minnesota Christmas tournament in Rochester. He won the 132-pound weight class in impressive fashion at the two-day event.

Parriott defeated a two-time Class 3A Minnesota state champion in Maolu Woiwor of Apple Valley and three-time Class A North Dakota state champion in Jordan Shearer of West Fargo. He beat Woiwor 4-2 in overtime in the semifinals and Shearer 3-2 for the title.

“He manages his matches well,” New Prague coach Greg Tikalsky said. “He wins a lot of matches by two to four points, but is in control throughout the match.”

By winning all five of his tournament matches, Parriott raised his season record to 16-1. Parriott followed that up with six more victories in The Clash Duals this past weekend in Rochester. He is closing in on 150 career victories.

“He is great to have in the practice room,” Tikalsky said. “He works hard, and brings a lot of experience to his teammates.”

Parriott finished third at 120 pounds in the Class 2A state meet a year ago. He is ranked No. 1 at 132 pounds this season.

“He thinks like a coach and knows a lot about the top-ranked wrestlers in the state as well as the nation,” Tikalsky said.

Skating to first place

Two South Suburban Conference boys’ hockey teams, Eagan and Eastview, came away with holiday tournament titles.

Eagan, behind two goals by senior forward Jack Jenson, defeated Hermantown 4-1 in the finals of the South St. Paul Premier tournament at Wakota Arena. He also recorded a hat trick and three assists in an 8-1 semifinal victory over Woodbury.

Eastview topped Centennial 3-1 for the title in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup at Ridder Arena. Junior forward Cole McDevitt scored two goals.

Top performances

• Lakeville North freshman goaltender Jake Oettinger made 34 saves, shutting out Class 2A, No. 2 Hill-Murray 3-0 in a nonconference boys’ hockey game Saturday. It was his third shutout of the season.

• Junior guard Sam Stensgard scored a season-high 31 points, leading Simley to an 82-59 nonconference boys’ basketball victory over Concordia Academy last Thursday. The Spartans are 9-2 through their first 11 games.
