Apple Valley advances at The Clash

• THE CLASH: Three expected champions and one pleasant surprise will make up Saturday’s championship bracket at The Clash National Wrestling Duals in Rochester.

Apple Valley, Oak Park/River Forest (Ill.) and Bergen (N.J.) Catholic — all No. 1 seeds in their qualifying brackets — emerged undefeated from Friday’s first round of competition and will compete for the overall tournament title Saturday.

They will be joined by Hastings, which was seeded No. 4 in its bracket but qualified for the top bracket as a result of some late-match heroics and the surprising failure of top-seeded Cincinnati (Ohio) Archbishop Moeller.

Hastings trailed Bound Brook (N.J.) 22-2 in the Bracket D finals but rallied to pull out the victory, thanks to four consecutive pins and a major decision to earn its spot in the finals with a 33-26 victory.

Moeller nearly became the first top seed in tournament history to lose all three of its qualifying matches, falling to Woodbury,(Iowa) Central and Grand Island (Neb.) before rallying for a close victory over Independence (Iowa). St. Michael-Albertville lost a chance to defend its 2013 title when it fell to Chicago Marist 44-17 in the opening round semifinals of its bracket.
