Minnesota club to compete for Olympic speed-skating berths

A dozen members of the Twin Cities-based Midway Speedskating Club will race at the U.S. Olympic Trials for long-track speedskating Dec. 27-Jan. 1 in Kearns, Utah.

The group includes 2010 Olympian Rebekah Bradford-Plath of Apple Valley, who qualified to race in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,500-meter events, and two-time Olympian Maria Lamb of River Falls, Wis., who will compete in the 3,000 and 5,000. Other senior skaters racing at the trials are Paul Dyrud (Plymouth), Mike and Mac Blumel (Woodbury), Rebekah Dyrud (Plymouth), Leah Lambert (Blaine) and Allie Thunstrom (St. Paul).

Junior skaters Kyle Ronchak (Arden Hills), Steven Hartman (Falcon Heights), Andrew Turner (St. Paul) and Chris Windman (Somers, N.Y.) also will race at the trials and are under consideration for the U.S. team that will compete at the junior world championships in March.

Canterbury unveils stakes schedule

Canterbury Park released a 2014 stakes schedule that includes 24 races, topped by the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby on closing day. The track will pay $1.8 million in stakes purses for the 69-day meet, which begins May 16 and ends Sept. 13.
