Rosemount sophomore Megan Wenman is trying to become as adept with the rifle as she is in the pool.

One of the state's top girls' swimmers headed up to Bemidji for the deer hunting opener after another stellar Class 2A, Section 3 meet Friday.

Wenman took first place in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. She won the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.79 seconds and the 200 in 1:51.12. The Irish standout was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle at the state meet a year ago.

Wenman also swam the anchor leg on Rosemount's victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams in the section meet. They finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the state meet last year.

"We've worked pretty hard this season," Wenman said. "We haven't rested for any meets, so we've been pretty tired. I haven't been very close to my best times."

The 400 group broke the section record with a time of 3:32.38. Cretin-Derham Hall previously held the mark with a time of 3:33.33. She was joined on the team by juniors Grace Herron and Olivia Johnston and freshman Katie Garrity. Eighth-grader Cassandra Hutchins replaced Johnston on the 200 relay team.

The morning after the meet, Wenman bagged a doe during the hunting opener. It's her fourth year hunting.

"It's a lot of fun hunting," Wenman said. "It's really exhilarating."

Headed to Colorado

Northfield senior middle hitter Anna Pfefferle will sign a letter of intent Wednesday with the University of Colorado volleyball team. The 6-foot Pfefferle, who also is a forward on the girls' basketball team, will sign her letter during a 4 p.m. ceremony in the school's cafeteria.
