Even the best teams need a pep talk from time to time. Or a kick in the rear end.
The Burnsville girls’ soccer team got a mixture of both at halftime Wednesday, and went on to control play after intermission to oust Andover 3-0 in a Class 2A state quarterfinal at Park of Cottage Grove.
“He told us that we were playing, not bad, but under what we could do,” senior midfielder Abby Soderholm said of the lengthy message delivered by her coach and uncle, John. “So we stepped it up.”
The top-seeded Blaze (17-0-3) got a goal from Amanda Hartmann two minutes into the second half, a 30-yard blast from straightaway that arced just over the outstretched hands of Andover goalkeeper Shelby Fehringer. That made the lead 2-0, and the Huskies (10-9-1) had difficulty mounting scoring opportunities thereafter.
“We had the ball in their end quite a bit and kept a lot of pressure on them, so I knew something good would happen,” John Soderholm said. “If we just kind of calmed down and played the feet and got some nice crosses in and got somebody at the top of the box, too, to finish.”
Finishing has been at the forefront of the Blaze players’ minds all season. Burnsville lost in the state championship game to Wayzata in 2011, and didn’t make it out of sectional play a year ago. Abby Soderholm thought that was because the team was too scared, a condition she said does not afflict this year’s squad.
“I think we didn’t expect to control the game like this, but I think we have the mindset that we’re actually going to play this year,” said Soderholm, who assisted on Burnsville’s first two goals.
Abby Soderholm is just thrilled to make a repeat visit to the Metrodome for a noon semifinal Tuesday.
“This year, we get to play during the day, so all the schoolkids will be able to come. It’s exciting,” she said.
In other quarterfinals:
Lakeville North 1, Mahtomedi 0: No team clings to a 1-0 lead like Lakeville North, and its effervescent goalkeeper Alexis Joyce. So, when Sarah Fisco put the Panthers ahead in the 11th minute of Wednesday’s Class 2A state semifinal at Park of Cottage Grove, Joyce knew the drill.
“I definitely knew it was going to be in my hands, because we’re definitely a one-goal team,” Joyce said after the 50th shutout of her career. “We like to keep it nice and close.”
It was the seventh 1-0 victory of the season for Lakeville North (14-2-3), which advances to play Burnsville in Tuesday’s semifinals at the Metrodome. The Panthers also had two matches end in scoreless ties.
Eden Prairie 2, Mounds View 1: The Eagles (12-5-2) got first-half goals from sophomores Brianna Lupo and Meghan Verkinderen, and held on to beat Mounds View.
Minnetonka 3, Elk River 0: The Skippers (15-2-2) outshot Elk River 24-6 in a dominating victory in a Class 2A quarterfinal at St. Cloud State. They received goals from three different players, Elizabeth Endy, Ellen Mau and Molly Pitzele.
