Senior running back Jeff Jones ran for five touchdowns as the Millers spoiled Southwest’s homecoming in a romp. Jones, who verbally committed to the Gophers and then reopened his recruitment, now has 34 touchdowns this season. Washburn won its 28th consecutive game against Southwest. The coaches agreed to end the game after three quarters because of the lopsided score, a third-quarter fight on the field and a report of nearby lightning.

Key of the game: Jones, the Minneapolis City Conference’s best player, was the difference. His signature run went left 38 yards for a touchdown. Accelerating as he reached the secondary, Jones gave a would-be Lakers tackler a brief ride before shaking him loose.

Quote: “Everybody knows that he’s a special talent. We like to give him an opportunity, and he impressed again tonight.” — Washburn coach Giovan Jenkins on Jones.

One thing to know: The new permanent lights at Pershing Field this season were made possible by 1961 Southwest graduate Harvey Feldman. He provided matching funds for all donations up to $300,000 “so that the games were played when people could actually watch them,” he said.
