Last Thursday's dual meet between Wayzata and Minnetonka was not just for the top spot in the Lake Conference swimming and diving standings.

It also decided the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A. The key word being "team."

Despite winning only four of 12 events, the host Trojans' superior depth helped them to a 99.5-86.5 victory.

Junior Val Wollman took first in 1-meter diving. Junior Haley Reuggemer — one of Minnesota's top synchronized swimmers — won the 500 freestyle, and the Trojans won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

With the victory, Wayzata moved up to No. 1 in 2A while previously top-ranked Minnetonka slipped to No. 2. Edina and Eden Prairie round out the top four.

The ball stops here

West Lutheran senior goalkeeper Mary McFee was unbeatable in three games last week as the Warriors went 2-0-1. She posted shutout victories over Rockford (1-0) and Cristo Rey (4-0) and stymied Southwest Christian in a 0-0 tie. McFee totaled 36 saves, giving her 84 this the season.

Storm brewing

Things appear to be looking up for the Chanhassen football team. The Storm, considered a preseason favorite in the Missota, stumbled early, losing its first two games to Hudson (Wis.) and archrival Chaska. But running back Raymonte Maynard, a transfer from Minneapolis Washburn, looks to be getting comfortable with teammates. He has rushed for 302 yards on 22 carries — averaging 13.7 yards per run — in the past three games.

Skippers survive in volleyball

Minnetonka defeated Hopkins in an intense five-set match last week, moving into first place in the Lake Conference volleyball standings. The Skippers won the first and third sets, only to see Hopkins rally to tie the match twice by winning the second and fourth sets. The teams were so evenly matched that the fifth and deciding set went longer than expected, with Minnetonka finally pulling out a 25-15, 18-25, 25-16, 22-25, 21-19 victory. Hannah Weidner led Minnetonka with 21 kills.

Private school football rivalry

Usually, a Blake/Breck game with a lot at stake refers to a tennis or soccer match. But the two rivals meet Friday at Blake in a football game pitting a pair of 3-1 teams. Blake is coming off a 22-7 victory at Minnehaha Academy while Breck outscored St. Paul Academy 48-32 last week.
