PREP SPOTLIGHT GAME DAY

STILLWATER AT CRETIN-DERHAM HALL, 7 P.M.

First time on national TV: ESPN2’s broadcast will be the first nationally televised high school football game played in Minnesota. The network has ranked Cretin-Derham Hall defensive lineman Jashon Cornell as the No. 1 national recruit for the class of 2015.

Cretin-Derham Hall update: Raiders coach Mike Scanlan said of Stillwater: “You have to be able to physically hold your own against them. If they get an opportunity, they are going to pound you. Defensively we’re not going to really knock anybody down, but we can run to the ball. When we’ve got the ball, we have to find a way to get it to [senior running back] Blake Banham. Everything is built around him.”

Stillwater update: “Why wouldn’t you?” Ponies coach Beau LaBore said of Cretin feeding Banham the ball. The mission for his defense, LaBore said, is to mitigate the damages. The same is true of Cornell, the Raiders’ havoc-causing defensive end. The physical Ponies offensive line must control the line of scrimmage and generate tough yards with effective inside running.

Coaching streak of infamy? LaBore is 0-10 overall against the Raiders. The two Stillwater victories came before LaBore arrived from Woodbury in 2011.

On the other hand: Those victories in 2009 and 2010 make Stillwater the only school to defeat Cretin-Derham Hall twice in Suburban East Conference play since the Raiders joined in 2005.
