Hopkins volleyball coach Vicki Swenson received an unusual request last February.

A longtime friend and coaching associate, Tawny Dahmes, called Swenson with the news that she was getting married.

Dahmes asked Swenson if she would be willing to become an ordained minister and officiate at her wedding.

Swenson, who has coached Hopkins for 19 years and never has backed down from a challenge, said yes.

"I've done a lot of public speaking, so that part wasn't intimidating," Swenson said. "My goal was to not screw up and be on the bad side of grandmas. Grandmas can be a tough crowd."

The wedding went off with hardly a hitch Saturday, with Swenson performing her first ceremony.

"It was actually very fun," Swenson said. "I am forever certified in Minnesota!"

She did admit to one minor mistake, however.

"I spelled Olmsted County wrong on the certificate. I'll have to fix that."

Hornets still have their sting

After a breakout 2012 season that saw Edina rise to No. 1 in the Class 6A state football rankings, many observers thought the Hornets would backslide a bit as they had many holes to fill due to graduation.

If Friday's 40-0 rout of Holy Angels is a good indicator, it appears observers were wrong. Edina will once again be among the state's elite teams.

First-year starting quarterback Troy Peterson was efficient and steady in his debut, completing 10 of 14 passes for 104 yards.

What stood out was the depth of Edina's running game. Nine different players carried the ball, led by 68 yards from Peterson. Starting tailback Kevin Placide was the object of attention from Holy Angels and was held in check for most of the night, but finally broke free on a 26-yard scoring run in the third quarter and finished with 48 yards on the ground.

Soccer power

The west metro was well-represented in the state soccer coaches association preseason rankings.

Girls

Two-time defending champion Wayzata earned the No. 1 spot in the Class 2A poll. Eden Prairie was ranked No. 3, Maple Grove was slotted at No. 8 and Edina at No. 10. In Class 1A, four of the top six spots were occupied by teams from the west: No. 1 Benilde-St. Margaret's, No. 2 Blake, No. 4 Minnehaha Academy and No. 6 Orono.

Boys

Bloomington Jefferson was the highest-ranked west team in Class 2A, at No. 5. The Jaguars were followed by No. 7 Minneapolis South, No. 8 Eden Prairie and No. 9 Wayzata.

In Class 1A, Benilde-St. Margaret's copped the No. 2 spot, just behind No. 1-ranked Rochester Lourdes. Breck was ranked No. 5, Waconia No. 7 and Minneapolis Washburn No. 10.
