Girls' swimming and diving preview

A look at the top storylines in girls' swimming and diving:

1. Edina seeks four in a row

Edina has won a part of three consecutive state titles three times. This year’s squad will look to become the school’s first to make it four. The Hornets won the Class 2A crown a year ago despite capturing the top spot in just two events, the 100-yard breast stroke and 200 medley relay. Olivia Anderson was part of both victories.

2. Juniors form dynamic duo

Chanhassen’s Zoe Avestruz and Kaia Grobe each won two events in the Class 2A state meet a year ago. Avestruz took the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly while Grobe won the 50 and 100 freestyle. Grobe is the two-time defending state champ in both. They also helped the Storm win the 400-freestyle relay.

3. Good (K) night for St. Michael-Albertville

There was a reason Kasey Roberts of St. Michael Albertville was all smiles as she stood on the podium at last year’s state meet — nobody improved as much to get to the top. She won the 200 individual medley and was the runner-up in the 100 breast stroke. In 2011, she was third in the individual medley and sixth in the breast stroke. All but one of those swimmers who finished ahead of her that year were back in 2012.

4. Tandem leaves their mark

Two Big 9 Conference phenoms — Mankato West senior Danielle Nack and Albert Lea sophomore Lindsey Horejsi — have made a name for themselves on the state front, and now hope to do likewise on the national scene. Nack broke the 100-butterfly state record held by Rachel Bootsma of Eden Prairie with a time of 52.41 seconds in the Class 1A finals a year ago. Horejsi set the 100 breast stroke mark with a winning time of 1:00.16. The national record is 58.75.

5. Diving to great depths

Bailey DuPay of Northfield might only be a junior, but she already is the Class 1A two-time defending state diving champion. She posted a winning mark of 394.25 while helping the Raiders to their second state championship. They also won the Class 1A title in 1998. Eight of the top 10 divers from a year ago have graduated, so expect DuPay’s success from the diving board to continue in 2013.
