Burnsville's run in the American Legion World Series ended with a 3-1 loss to Petaluma, Calif., on Sunday in Shelby, N.C.

Petaluma (34-14) rode the pitching of Scott Hilbert and a two-run homer by Robert Busse to hand Burnsville (37-12) its second loss in the double-elimination tournament. Hilbert gave up one run and five hits over six innings to earn the victory, while Busse put the Californians up 3-0 in the third with his two-run shot.

Burnsville, which won the Central Plains Regional in Fargo, N.D., last week, scored its lone run in the fourth when Logan Vermeer's two-out single drove in Bo Hellquist, who led off with a single and advanced to second on Tyler Hill's single.

Cooper Maas took the loss for Burnsville, giving up three runs and five hits over six innings.

Burnsville loaded the bases in the fifth and had two runners on in the ninth but couldn't get a key two-out hit in either inning.

Peter Nordgren went 2-for-4 for Burnsville.
