Kari Solheim, East Ridge soccer, sr., 2013-14

Solheim is entering her fifth varsity season as midfielder and first as a team captain for East Ridge. In the offseason, she plays with the Minnesota Thunder Academy, which is arguably the state’s premier development program.

How long have you played with the Thunder? Since I was 8 years old. It was originally called Bangu when I started.

The highlight of your summer? We went to Colorado for a national tournament and did pretty well. We made it to the semifinals before losing. It was fun playing against some of the best players in the country and seeing how we matched up.

What are your strengths? I like to dribble and run. I love having the ball at my feet and taking on players one-on-one.

Would you rather score a game-winner or set one up? Probably feed someone for the goal. It’s great knowing that you helped a teammate.

How do feel about high school soccer? High school is probably the most fun soccer I’ve ever played. It’s not so serious and we all have similar goals, to just have fun and play for your school.

Is it tough to go from club to high school soccer? No. This is my fifth year, so I’m used to the level change. I go into the high school season wanting to have fun. It reminds me why I play soccer in the first place.

Tip for a young player: Play with passion and love what you do. If you don’t love it, what are you playing for?
