Morning thunderstorms and rain showers caused so much flooding on the international bike course, that a portion of the Life Time Fitness Minneapolis Triathlon had to be suspended before it even began.
An hour before the scheduled 7 a.m. start of the international course -- 1.5k swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run -- event organizers made the decision to just run the shortened sprint course for all amateurs because it was unaffected by the weather. Because there was prize money on the line, the professionals competed in the international course distances for the swim and run, but had a shortened bike ride.
On the men's professional side, Cameron Dye won the event with a time of 1:03:12.28. For the women, Alicia Kaye, who leads the overall Life Time series, won in 1:10:14.63.
Though the professionals trained for and planned to compete in a longer distance race, Dye said the last-minute shakeup didn't affect his performance very much.
"For me in a lot of ways, it was a good thing," said Dye, who crashed at this race a couple years ago. "I felt strong...it's nice to have a really good finish here."
