Buxton, Sano to play in MLB Futures game in New York

Two big pieces of the Twins' future – Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano - will be on display at the All-Star Futures Game next month in New York.

Major League Baseball has released the rosters for the July 14 game, and they included Buxton, an outfielder, and Sano, a third baseman - the Twins' two top prospects and two of the best in all of baseball. Buxton will play for the U.S. team; Sano will be on the World team roster.

The game will take place at 1 p.m. at Citi Field.

Buxton, 19, was drafted in 2012 with the second overall pick and has dominated in his first full season in the minors. He batted .341 with eight home runs and 55 RBI in 68 games at Class A Cedar Rapids before being promoted on Sunday to Class A Fort Myers. He's showed off all five tools while rocketing up the prospect charts.

MLB.com ranked him as the 18th best prospect at the beginning of the season, but he crushed Midwest League pitching so well that ESPN'S Keith Law ranked him No. 2 last month. On Tuesday, www.baseballprospectus.com ranked him No. 1 in all of baseball.

Before Buxton, there was Sano, whom the Twins signed for $3.1 million in 2009.

The Twins have not regretted that decision, as Sano, 20, has displayed some of the best power in all of minor league baseball. In 56 games at Fort Myers, Sano batted .330 with 16 homers and 48 RBI before being promoted to Class AA New Britain earlier this month.

What has pleased the Twins even more is that Sano has held his own at third base. Sano is listed at 6 feet, 4 inches and 236 pounds, and some have predicted that he would grow out of the position, while the Twins feel he has the athleticism to handle the hot corner.

Fans have been able to catch glimpses of both Buxton and Sano.

Sano played with the Twins during a spring training game that was televised on FoxSports North. And the station televised a Cedar Rapids game earlier this month, during which Buxton put on a show.

Now both will be in the spotlight in the Big Apple for everyone to see.
