Logan Sandgren referred to BOLD as a “no-show” in last year’s baseball state tournament. He took it personally.

Sandgren threw a one-hit shutout Monday, leading the Warriors to a 3-0 victory over Osakis in the Class 1A finals at Target Field. BOLD is the Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian-Danube school district.

“This is a big difference from a year ago,” Sandgren said. The Warriors dropped both games in their initial state appearance in 2012. “We were flawless this year.”

The lefthander was in pursuit of his third consecutive no-hitter. Sandgren threw a no-hitter in the state quarterfinals, a 13-0, six-inning victory due to the 10-run rule over top-seeded Wabasha-Kellogg. He also threw a no-hitter in his last outing in the Section 2 tournament, a 12-0 triumph over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

“I was nervous at the start of the game,” Sandgren said after he struck out six and walked five in a 112-pitch performance. “I had to calm down.”

Sandgren had his third consecutive no-hit bid broken up by Osakis senior Douglas Zimmel with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Silverstreaks catcher lined a 1-0 fastball into center field for a single.

“Logan is a competitor,” BOLD coach Brian Kingery said. “He’s not afraid of anybody. He bears down, and gets the job done.”

BOLD (18-6) scored the only run Sandgren would need in the top of the second inning. No. 8 hitter Austin Weis, sophomore left fielder, blooped a two-out single over shortstop to score Tyler Seehusen from third base. Seehusen opened the inning by walking, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout.

The Warriors made it 2-0 in the fourth when Weis’ two-out single skipped past Osakis’ left fielder, enabling junior Sawyer Tersteeg to score all the way from first base. BOLD added a third run on another error by Osakis (20-3) following a sharply hit ground ball to shortstop by Weis in the sixth inning.

“Austin had a great game,” Kingery said. “He came up big for us today.”

BOLD had to go through the state’s best en route to the title. After Sandgren no-hit Wabasha-Kellogg, the Warriors knocked off defending state champion St. Agnes.
