La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Twins: Walters promoted

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle is reporting via twitter that righthander P.J. Walters is being promoted to the Twins and will join the rotation. Looks like he will start on Saturday.

Walters is 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA.

The manager was pretty blunt before the game.

``Egos are going to have to stay on the bench,'' he said. ``We need to win a ballgame.''

So if anyone's bat gets hot, he's going to ride with them. And he's ready to try someone else if he doesn't see results on the field. The Twins' eight-game losing streak ties the Dodgers for the longest in the league this season.

Justin Morneau is the designated hitter tonight because he apparently took a ball off his leg during the Braves series. He wanted to stay in the lineup, so he will be the DH tonight.

Trevor Plouffe said almost all the symptoms are gone after he suffered a concussion during the Braves series, but he's not quite ready to try on-field activities.

Darin Mastroianni had successful surgery on his left foot on Wednesday. He'll be in a cast for a week before switching to a boot. He'll wear the boot for two weeks then try physical activity.

The Twins seek their first road victory since May 9 at Boston...their eight-game losing streak is their longest losing streak since September 9-11, 2011, when they lost 11 straight.

A couple positives from their horrible series in Atlanta: Josh Willingham was 3 for 10 with a homer and the relievers posted a 1.69 ERA.

Struggling Tigers catcher Alex Avila won't be in the lineup tonight since the Twins have a lefthander on the mound.

Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter wanted to donate $1,000 per home run to the Oklahoma tornado relief. But then he realized something: He has hit just one home run his season. So he's making a lump sum donation instead.

Will be back with updates!
